Why is Physical Fitness so Important for Kids

Regular physical activity is an integral component of the health of every child in the United States. Inadequate physical activity of children will lead to a serious public health problem. Forming positive exercise habits while they are children will carry over into their adulthood, which will reduce morbidity and mortality from cardio-vascular disease, Type II diabetes and other ailments that can be chronic. Sustaining regular activity all through the childhood years contribute to weight control well into their adult years.

A study for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), indicates that the national average of vigorous physical activity habits of young people are performed by 85% of them only one day a week, and only 27% perform some type of moderate physical activity 5 or more days as week. Boys are more likely than girls to report the 5 day moderate activity. This shortage of physical activity among children is compounded by an excess of sedentary behavior, which can be sitting in front of their computers, watching televisions shows and by doing their homework.

Physical eduction classes should be a required class a schools. Most elementary schools around the United States only offer, on average, two days of physical activities per week. As a solution, parents should enroll their children in some organized sports, or any other type of class that promotes physical activities, like dance or gymnastics. While encouraging children to do vigorous activities, there will be various reasons as to why it will be hard to do so, like children not interested in getting involved in any type of activity, spot availability from sports or other classes are limited, and there could be a lack of community resources. Whatever the cause, it’s important and imperative for parents to initiate efforts to get their children involved in some form of physical activity before they become sedentary on a permanent basis.

A total of 30 minutes of moderate activity, performed on most days of the week will have a significant impact with the prevention of cardio-vascular disease, diabetes and many chronic diseases that are now prevalent and are now an epidemic with our children.

Muscle takes up less room than fat so don’t think about the number on the scale either because muscle weighs more than fat.
