Why is Fitness Important for Teenagers?

The benefits of physical fitness are difficult if not impossible to over-estimate. A healthy body is really a key to a long and fulfilling life. If not the most essential element, it is always very high on the list. It’s also something that people have some control over, in most cases, and they can help their own bodies along by being good to themselves. For some people, it might seem that we live in a culture that is overly concerned with fitness, with the prevalence of gyms and exercise references in all the popular media. Yet the statistics suggest that we still live in very unhealthy patterns, and obesity is becoming a real problem in some of the most so-called developed countries on the planet. It’s an issue that should be addressed early on, and this article will talk briefly about how it’s important to start in the teenage years.

This is the time when some of the most elemental living patterns get developed and solidified. The teenage years do set the stage for the rest of a lifetime. Of course, it’s true that many of the patterns here are rather exaggerated and sometimes overly tragic versions of how things will be later on, but there are still some general rhythms that will certainly repeat. It’s essential, then, to develop and follow an exercise regime that works. This means one that is interesting as well as one where the results are visible. This will set the stage for a long life, but it will also give them tools to help improve their own body image, which is essential for self-image at this particular time.

There are other reasons, too, that fitness is so important for teens. The body’s metabolism is going in multiple directions at once, and there is an increased need for rest, and periods of great growth. This means that it’s a very likely period for weight gain, and exercise is a good way to channel the pounds into muscle. Fitness is also a fantastic way to learn how to relax, and control the emotional responses to the bumpy parts of the road in life. And last, there’s something to be said about the sheer pleasure of doing activities that are life-affirming. They will always yield good results that show in attitude, in stability, and in health.
